Until then, here are a couple of ways to work with 'webp' files.

To get Photoshop to recognize webp files, you need to install a free plugin – created by Google (as was the webp format, back in 2010!) – called WebPShop.

After downloading the plugin follow the instructions on the page to install it and restart Photoshop. You should now be able to open, edit, and save webp files!
WebP for Mac Finder
Now that you have Photoshop handling webp files, it would be nice if your Mac could preview them as well, right? This time, it'll require some terminal work, but it's pretty simple with WebPQuickLook.
Running the simple script in terminal will restart Finder for you and you should be all set!
